The Last Recourse: Cervical Spine Surgery To Ease Pain
Cervical spine surgery can be a pain in the neck, but it is an important pain to be experienced especially if it can prevent paralysis or worse, death.
The spine of the mammal is what separates it from the rest of the animal kingdom. The spine of the humans are what separates it from the rest of the mammals, making him more flexible, giving more freedom of movement, and best of all, the ability to turn the neck so that what is behind can be seen. And that ability to turn the neck is made possible by the small bones which attach the head and the neck to the body: the cervical vertebrae. These are the all important set of bones as it not only encases the spinal cord, but if damaged the rest of the body and the brain can just shut down. Still scared of cervical spine surgery? You should be, it is there to save lives, not be ridiculed by unnecessary fears that may derail the treatments to save a life.
The thoracic may be in charge of the trunk all the way down the body, the lumbar from the waist down and the sacral the pelvic area down, but they all depend on the cervical, where everything starts. Any damage to that area can kill, just look at Christopher Reeves, if he did not go through a cervical spine surgery, he would not have gone on to raise awareness of paraplegics worldwide. He would not have lived to be the ultimate of superheroes as only Superman could be.
If it comes to back pain, the treatments can be easy and manageable like that of the bulging disc treatment which may only involve aspirin and ibuprofen to control the painful sensation and the inflammation. With the cervical spine damaged severely, there is no such course of action. Yes, there are conditions where no surgery is needed, but those are not the severe one. There may only be a disc bulging in the cervical area, but that is not the topic here. There are some conditions like a trauma that can break some bones and only the immediate cervical spine surgery performed may save the person’s life.
If the fear of surgery is what is bugging down the decision making process, remember that if the defect is minimal, there may be no need for a cervical spine surgery. Surgery involving the spine column is always the last course of action and if suggested that means no other treatments can succeed.
There are risks in any surgical procedures and cervical spine surgery is not spared those risks, however, the risks can be managed through careful monitoring and proper medications as prescribed by the surgeon.
